The Melon In My Skin

hidden behind almond eyes of shame

behind a hidden smile of full lips

behind the dimples in my cheeks.

behind the curves of my body

full breast

full legs

full thighs butt

hips of a baby maker

birthing brown babies from a womb

hidden behind the dialect

fulfulde creole trini Jamaican

Swahili

the language of my brown ancestors

hidden behind

the projects that surround me

the drunks crack heads ..

jail birds high school drop outs

and teen pregnancy

mocked with the ridicule of my brown skin

NIgger

Niggah

Nigga

no matter how you spell it its all the same

no matter how different we are

we’re all the same

hidden behind the pain

the scars that once scarred my great grandmother

the same that scar me today

but its hidden

hidden in a society that never lets go

a society that makes us low

all because of the melon in my skin
