I used to think I was a poet. Back with I was in middle school and high school I often kept books where I could write five and six poems at any given time. This was back when writing wasn't cool. Out of my friends I think I was the only poet. I got all the praise. Even in high school my teachers often entered me in contest and praised my work. Now a days, 2 years after high school it's not the same. It seems like my poems are becoming redundant. When I see other people work I am blown away by their creativity and mindset that I often wished it was me who wrote that masterpiece. I find myself becoming angry by people who were never really writers branching out and being better than me, a veteran to this artistic craft. I read books and listen to people like Nas and Tupac who for years have turned their poetry into raps however, I am unmotivated. I often tune into YouTube and watch Def Poetry Jam although, I appreciate every artist I am still not motivated. Then a light bulb went off in this big head of mines. Maybe I am not a poet yet, simply a great story teller. My poems have definition and moral; I cannot sit and use 100 big words to make them rhyme into a scenario. Yet I take real life situations and shorten then into a free verse. I write novels like the best of them and that is something that people are not messing with me on. So as I go on this journey to becoming a well known writer maybe I need to get it into my head that I am not a poet but simply a great story teller. This is why I think I am a writer.
